4th September 2007.

Dear Parent/Carers,

We are starting off our topic of the Romans straight away in Years 3 and 4 and this will be ‘launched’ by our visit to Murton Park.  Here the children will be given the opportunity to become recruits for the Roman Army for the day.  This involves:

·         Spending the day put being put through their paces as Roman Soldiers

·         Javelin  practice

·         Guard duty

·         Parade ground drill

·         Filling in an application form for the army.

At the end of the day, the children will receive a certificate for their days work and will be paid in (replica) Roman Army money.

As part of this Roman experience the children will be provided with a lunch.  Please could you advise us of any specific dietary and medical allergies or requirements.  From past experience, we recommend that your child brings a healthy snack to eat as the Roman Army had a very long and busy day!

Your child will not be required to wear school uniform on the day for their visit and, instead, we ask them to wear suitable warm outdoor clothing and waterproof footwear (that they do not mind if it gets a little muddy).  If the day is cold we recommend your child wear wellies, they have a change of shoes to keep the coach drivers happy and not get mud all over the coaches!

It is also recommended that they do not wear watches or jewellery as they may get lost. Plus you wouldn’t see many Roman Soldiers wearing a watch.

The children will have an opportunity to visit the shop to purchase a small memento of the day and are allowed to bring £3.00 pocket money.  We ask that this is placed in a named purse/wallet or envelope and given to your child’s teacher at the beginning of the day.

In order for the children to gain the best from this Roman experience, we have organised 2 visits to Murton Park on:

Wednesday, 12th September 2007 – Mrs Rozenbroek/Mrs Finn’s class and ½ of Mrs McPherson/Mrs Machon’s class.

Friday, 14th September 2007 – Mrs Wilson’s class and the other ½ of Mrs McPherson/Mrs Machon’s class.

Again in order for the children to fully engage in all of the different activities, on both days the children will not return back to school until 4.00 p.m.

Please return the permission slip below together with your contribution of £17.00 towards the cost of the visit to your child’s class teacher as soon as possible.  If you are able to assist on either of the visits, could you also please indicate this on the permission slip along with a contact telephone number.  Your help would be much appreciated but unfortunately we are limited to the numbers we can take, therefore we may not be able to guarantee all volunteers a place.

Here’s hoping for nice weather and we are sure that we will all thoroughly enjoy being  Roman Soldiers for the day.

Yours sincerely,

Year 3 and 4 Team.
