Winners of Lifestyle 2007 Brough Babes!

The Brough Babes

Jodie, Carrie, Katie and Ellie have an even bigger project planned!!!! We wanted to promote exercise to our community and after a survey we soon realised people wanted a free facility that would help keep them fit, so we haven taken on the huge task of creating a public walk from Brough Haven to the Humber Bridge. Called 'BROUGH BABES HUMBER HIKE' We are clearing and creating the paths and preserving the wildlife that lives there. We are also promoting water safety with the walk being by the river. We are aiming to get companies to help us with our project. Funds raised will go towards the creating of the walk and the running of a website we are creating to promote our walk. We are also going to design a booklet about the walk and all the wildlife along the way, as well as holding a balloon race during the summer break and releasing the balloons when we officially open the walk and holding a Craft Fair.

We have held a successful sports fun day where we got our community involved in sporting activities and still carrying on our 2006 project by promoting the importance of wearing cycle helmets.

As Brough Babes we say 'NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE'...... we'll keep you up to date!!

Fighting Four, Brough – Project update

On 6th August the team went to the Rainbow Lodge Day Nursery to talk to the children about fire safety, taking toys for them to play with, play fire fighter clothes to dress up in, stickers and books to give out.  We will also be making approx 80 fire safety bags to hand out to the other nurseries in Brough, so that the message is wide spread.

We are also arranging a colouring competition around fire safety for some of the youngest in Brough.

The 15th August, 9am-11am is our cake, bun and homemade, greeting card sale in the village, any money raised will go towards us buying pens, pencils and creative items for Brough School.

On 1st September we are doing a sponsored bike ride across the Humber Bridge, hopefully getting involved is one of our teachers and the Brough's community police woman. We are raising money for kidney research.

The Fighting Four’, Brough

Oliver, Georgina, Nathan and Samantha organised and held a Fire and Home Safety Awareness Day in Brough

.

The team have been working alongside the Humberside Fire & Rescue Service and British Gas to gather leaflets and information to promote the importance of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, both in the home and when travelling abroad.

On the day of their event Lifestylers and firefighters were on hand to offer help and advice, forms will also be available to complete with firefighters on how members of the community can have free home safety checks for those who don’t have smoke alarms fitted.

The team have been busy preparing for the event and have created lots of posters to put around the village promoting their endeavours

Sarah Wilkinson of Humberside Fire & Rescue said, “We have a number of teams who have taken on the Lifestyle Firefighter Challenge this year, their energy and enthusiasm never ceases to amaze us.  We feel passionate about educating young people and the community about safety both in and away from the home and I hope this encourages more people to be more safety conscious in their everyday lives.”

‘The Fighting Four’, Brough  2nd Update!

Just to let you know the awareness day we held on the 28th was very successful, and we raised funds for Brough school, which was an additional bonus.

Carrying on from there we helped run the Humberside Fire & Rescue unit giving out booklets, stickers & safety advice, this was held at the Brough Community centre on Wed 1st August. We had another good day.  Also with the fire women's help we have arranged a children's fire awareness morning at the local nursery, Rainbow Lodge in Brough to do a presentation of the dangers of fire. We will take fire dressing up kit, toys that the children can play with and lots of stickers, books and height charts all with a story warning of the dangers.

It was also great to see our photo and story in the Hull Advertiser! thanks for your help.

Comment by the Chief Constable:

Chief Constable of Humberside Police, Tim Hollis said, “Young people get a pretty bad time from the media these days. In my experience, the majority are perfectly normal kids growing up in a challenging world. Our Lifestyle project is testament to the fact that, given the right encouragement and support, many of them actively seek to make a contribution to their local community. Tonight we have illustrated the superb work undertaken by teams to improve do just that across Humberside and I’m proud of the role played by Humberside Police in making Lifestyle happen. This year alone thousands of young people took part in Lifestyle, working thousands of hours to help others. I want to offer my personal congratulations to everyone involved.”

Life style

I was in a life style group with my sister and two of her friends.

Our Life style project was for the blind in Goole.

It was called Herib. Our group was called Visionary’s.

What we did

First we did car washing and we raised £24.

Then we did a coffee morning; we did it in the church. We made about 110 buns sold all of them,

And we served coffee and tea.

How much we raised

We raised £124.We got a letter from Herib

And it said “thank you very much for all the things you have done. You should be proud of your selves”.

Lifestyle 2005-2007

I’m Carrie and I was part of lifestyle 2005 and 2006 I have been Brough Babes' mascot as I was too young to enter. Jodie, Ellie, Katie and Abi were the team members and my Auntie Gill was the adult adviser. The first year Brough Babes wanted to help the South Cave Rescue centre. They raised money in lots of different ways, one that they raised the most money from was bag packing. They bought balls, Frisbees and lots of different things like that. The Brough Babes and me were then rewarded with a tour round the place and were allowed to play with the dogs and cats. At the presentation night the Brough Babes were expecting to win Wales but to their surprise they were a runner-up and won France.

For the second year I was still too young to enter so I was the Brough Babes mascot again. The Brough Babes didn’t know what to do so they sent round a little questionnaire, the results they received was saying that not many people had cycle helmets, so this then turned out to be their project. They did numerous bag packs, craft and bun stalls and a balloon race which came to a total of over £2,000. After raising all this money they ended up being able to buy 400 cycle helmets and give them to every child at Brough School. The Brough Babes filmed a DVD that they showed to Brough School, they sent all the DVD’s to all the local schools and library’s. After all their hard work they ended up in the top 5 which meant they would win France or the top price Florida. They were all very excited and couldn’t wait, but at the end when the judges said who had won it was unfotunatly not them. After their put-down they then were more determined to enter lifestyle the next year.

Now for the third year I was luckily old enough to enter lifestyle properly. We were going to carry on with cycle helmets but it turned out from doing a survey that most people in Brough were wearing our helmets. Also in our results it turned out that people would like a free facility that the whole family could use. We looked on the internet and at maps to find a free facility. We finally found somewhere and chose to have a look. The place we found was a walk 6 miles long and went from Brough Haven to the Humber Bridge, we then walked it to see what needed doing.

We called the walk Brough Babes Humber Hike. We raised money in lots of different ways, we were not trying to raise too much money as we didn’t need much. This is what we did: we did a balloon raise, craft fair and 2 bag packs this raised a total of £1,622.

We then bought 16 posts which and burnt HH into them for Humber Hike and arrows to direct people in the right direction. We cleared and created the paths added benches, dog poo bins and litter bins. We made a picnic area at Welton Waters, which has a lifestyle lookout point and a information point there as well as at Brough Haven.

At the start of our walk (Brough Haven) it was a mess so we had a meeting with Brough and Elloughton Parish Council and they said, “That’s a lovely idea well done girls and we will certainly consider your idea”.

Once we had done all this hard work and done 2,152 hours in our project, we just had to hope we did well. Luckily for us we received a letter in the post telling us well done and that we were in the top 5.

We were all so excited including our adult adviser Gill. The presentation night came on the 6th of November Mr Rowland and Mrs Peirson came as well. We were all so excited and couldn’t wait to find out if we won. It came to the moment we were all waiting for the judge said “and the winners of lifestyle 2007 is………The Brough Babes!! We couldn’t believe it.

The Funky Four

In our group the funky four we had four members who where Lauren Constantine, Charlotte Hamer, Alex Eyre and Tanya Chinganga. We spent lots of our summer working hard raising money for the M.S society (multiple sclerosis). Because Lauren's dad has M.S.

First we had a group meeting to decide what we were going to do. We eventually decided to do a bun sale and a jumble sale. First we did the bun sale, we all helped make the buns on the night before the bun sale. Unfortunately not all of our members were alowed to do the bun sale because it was at Alex’s nursery and they were fully booked so only Alex could do it. Then a couple of weeks later we had a jumble sale we worked hard and managed to raise £70 pounds at the jumble sale. All together we raised £95 pounds and all of that money went to the M.S society.

We had loads of fun doing lifestyle this year and we hope to carry on with it next year.

Life Style

I did life style in the holidays with my three friends Lauren, Charlotte and Tanya. Our group was the funky four. First we had a group meeting. At the meeting we wrote down some ideas we had to raise money. We also choose whom we were going to give the money to. We choose the ms society because Laurens dad had ms.

We managed to raise £95 for the MS society. Since we started late in the summer we didn’t get much done. I did a bun sale at my out of school club I raised £25 doing that. It was good fun. We had a jumble sale on Saturday. We raised £70. After the jumble sale we gathered the rest of the jumble and we went to the MS shop and gave them the rest of the jumble.

We had a great time doing life style. We all hope to do it next year and try to raise more money than before.
